Plovdiv is the second biggest city in Bulgaria. It is situated around seven hills, called “Tepeta”. Plovdiv’s history dates back to 4000 years. In ancient times there was a Thracian fortified settlement which was conquered by Phillip of Macedonia and the city received the name Phillipopolis. During the course of time, Plovdiv was a possession of different empires like: the Roman Empire (under the name Trimontium), the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire (under the name Filibe). The Ancient Plovdiv

The Ancient Plovdiv Historical and Architectural reserve is an architectural complex where the development of the city during the different ages can be seen: fortress remains from the Thracian times, a lot of well-preserved Roman buildings and constructions such as fortification walls, water and sewerage system, paved streets.

The most important constructions from the Roman period are:

The Roman Stadium, which was built during the 2nd century AD with similar design as the Stadium in Delphi. It was able to accommodate up to 30 000 people who have come to watch the gladiator fights and different sport events.

The Roman Forum and Odeon complex was built in 1st century AD. It is the biggest in Bulgaria and was situated on a territory of 11 hectares. In its northern part is located the Odeon having around 350 seats, which was used for the City Council gatherings. Later the Odeon was transformed into theatre.

The Ancient Roman Theatre was built in the 2nd century AD and is one of the best preserved such theatres in the world. In the 4th century a large part of the construction was destroyed by a natural disaster but in the recent past the theater was reconstructed and preserved for the future generations. Because of its good acoustic which is due to the specific architecture, the theatre is still used for concerts and other cultural events and can accommodate up to 7000 viewers.

The Historical Museum

The Historical Museum was founded in 1951. In four different expositions, located in separate buildings, the historical and cultural treasures (15th - 20th centuries) of Plovdiv and the region are kept.

“The Unification of Bulgaria from 1885” exposition displays exponent from the period when Plovdiv was the capital of Eastern Rumelia (an autonomous province in the Ottoman Empire established under the terms the Treaty of Berlin of 13 July 1878).

“The Bulgarian National revival” exposition is dedicated to the National Revival period (18th - 19th century) and the liberation movement against the Ottoman rule.

“The book publishing in Bulgaria 19th - 20th centuries” exhibition contains a great number of books, unique editions, geographical maps, school pictures and more. There is also a recreation of a classroom from the Bulgarian Revival Period.

“The Modern History” exhibition reveals the development of the city of Plovdiv from the Liberation (1878) until the end of the 1940s. There is also a big and very picturesque collection of Japanese Dolls exposed here.

The Archeological Museum

The Archeological Museum is founded in 1882. There are pottery, jewelry and tools from the Neolithic, Heliolithic and Bronze Ages, samples from the ancient Greek art, sculptures, different tools, instruments and jewelry from the Middle Ages and a big collection of religious items and books from the Renaissance period.

The Ethnographical Museum

The Ethnographical Museum houses a rich collection of exponent showing the traditional culture and life of the region during the Revival period (18th - 19th centuries) in several thematic fields: Agriculture, Crafts, Textiles and Clothing, Furniture and Interior, Musical instruments and Ritual items, Fine Arts and Photo gallery.

The Natural Science Museum

The Natural Science Museum is opened in 1955. Its exhibition is divided into: Minerals, Botany, Invertebrates, Aquarium, Sea Bottom, Fishes, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals.  On the ground floor of the building is located the largest freshwater aquarium in Bulgaria with more than 40 species of decorative fish and some amphibians. Another very interesting exposition is the collection of Rhodope minerals.

Pomorie city guide

The town of Pomorie lies about 20 km away from Bourgas, to the North. It is situated on a narrow peninsula in Bourgas Bay. This is a very old town, which was founded by the Ancient Greeks. Pomorie Lake

The Pomorie Lake is only 2 km north of the town. This is a very salty lagoon. The mud from the lake possesses medicinal qualities and is used for SPA, wellness and balneological purposes. There is a Visitor and Conservation Centre, where the tourists can learn interesting facts about the flora and the fauna of the lake and get useful information about the most interesting places where rare birds and other species can be observed.

Antique Beehive Tomb in Pomorie

The Antique Beehive Tomb is located to the west of the town. This is a Thracian mausoleum which was built around the 2nd-3rd century AD. The tomb is constructed from stones and bricks and consists of a corridor - 22 m long and a round 5.50 m high chamber (11 m in diameter). In the center of the chamber there is a hollow column. The ancient structure is unique for Bulgaria and fascinates tourists all over the world. World famous architects visit the tomb in order to study its construction and interesting shape.

Old Houses of Pomorie

The Old Houses of Pomorie is an architectural reserve, where typical 19th century Bulgarian wooden houses and cobblestone streets can be seen. The houses are two-storey buildings which represent the so called “Typical Black sea coastal house”. The Reservation is located near the sea shore, in the east part of the town. The houses are private and free access is not allowed, but the tourists can admire them from the outside, while walking on the narrow cobblestone streets.

Monasteries and churches in Pomorie

The St. George Monastery was founded in the 7th century AD by Byzantine settlers. As many other religious centers, the Monastery was burned down and destroyed by the Ottoman invaders. The present construction was built in 1856. There are not many wall-paintings because of the relatively new architecture of the temple, but the precious icons from 17th and 19th are attracting a lot of visitors. The Temple of St. George is the only male monastery in Southeast Bulgaria which still operates.

The Church of the Transfiguration of God was constructed in 1765 and is the oldest building in Pomorie.

The Church “Birth of the Virgin Mary” was built in 1890.

The Salt Museum was established in 2002 and is unique for Eastern Europe. Celebrations “Sea of Wine” - August

During the whole month of August there are different musical events, dance and theatric performances, exhibitions and wine tasting in Pomorie. There are also wine bazaars, where the connoisseurs can buy a bottle of nice Bulgarian wine on a very appropriate price. Interesting part of the festival is the arrival of God Dionysus and his entourage. Free samples of all kinds of wine can be tasted during the celebrations.

Varna city guide

Varna is the biggest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast and the third largest in Bulgaria. It is located about 130 km northern of Bourgas. On the territory of the city, during archeological researches, were found remains of human activity older than 7000 years. In the 6th century BC here was built the ancient fortress “Odessos”. Nowadays, Varna is a modern city with a lot of tourist attractions and many interesting historical and cultural places to visit.

Natural Park “Golden Sands”

The “Golden Sands” Natural Park is a small park located 17 km northeast of Varna with territory of 13, 2 km2. It surrounds the sea resort “Golden Sands”. The Natural Park is a protected area and is covered with a dense forest which is inhabited by some endangered plant and animal species.

In the park there are 10 tourists routes developed for the nature lovers - five normal tourist routes and five routes for people with special needs (incl. blind people and people with wheelchairs). The site is perfect for eco and photo tourism, biking, hiking, children’s tourism. Along all routes, there are numerous recreation places, equipped with sheds, benches, tables and fireplaces where you can sit, rests and have a snack, while enjoying the park, the sea and the Golden Sands resort panoramas.

Aladzha Rock Monastery

The most interesting place for the tourists is the rock monastery “Aladzha” which is situated in the southwestern side of the Park. It was founded in the 12th-13th century, but abandoned in the 18th century. The monastery complex is located in two levels in naturally formed caves. On the first level are situated the monastery sells, the kitchen, the dining room, the monastery church and a crypt. On the upper level lies the Chapel. On the chapel walls there partly preserved medieval wall paintings. The complex is declared a historical and architectural national monument.

Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden (Eco Park) was created in 1977. It is an ecological park - an arboretum, combining natural and artificial eco systems. The park collection comprises more than 300 different exotic bushes and trees, great number of irises and roses. It is declared a protected area with main purpose to shelter endangered plant species outside their natural habitat. On the territory of the Park is situated also the Academic Jockey Club where horse-riding lessons with an instructor can be performed. The Club offers also tours with a carriage on the territory of the Park.

The Upright Stones

The Upright Stones (Pobiti Kamani) is a natural phenomenon which lies at 18 km distance western from Varna. It is also called “The Stone Forest” and comprises over 300 stone pieces in different shapes - stone columns 10 m high, cones, cylinders, blocks and pieces with different sizes. The unique stone composition covers an area of 7 km2 and is declared a natural landmark with national importance. Some of the stone pieces resemble human sculptures, animals or mystical creatures.

Cape Galata

Cape “Galata” is one of the symbols of the city of Varna. It is also the borderline of the Varna Bay. The Cape is famous with its Lighthouse, which is one of the most important navigation facilities in the Bulgarian aquatory of Black Sea. The first Lighthouse starts operating with gas in 1863. In 1912 a new lighthouse is built and electrified. In 2001 is constructed a third, 22 m high modern lighthouse building with elevator.

The Palace in Balchik

Architectural Park Complex - the Palace in Balchik is the most impressive and fascinating place in Balchik, located in 40 km northern of Varna. This is an architectural and botanical park complex on the territory of the former summer residence of the Romanian Queen Maria. The Palace was designed by the Italian architects Augustino and Amerigo in 1924. Fountains, chapels, a bridge with waterfall and some buildings in different architectural styles can be seen around the park - Mauritanian, Bulgarian, Byzantine, Transylvanian, Roman and Arabic. Numerous different gardens are spreading all over the place, some of them even having own names as: Gethsemane Garden, Blue wave Garden, Garden with the cross-shaped water mirror, English Yard Garden, Magnolia Garden, Waterfall’s Garden, etc.

There are 14 Orthodox temples in Varna, the most significant of which are:

The Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral is the biggest temple in Varna, built in 1886 and was designed by the Odessan architect Maas. The building is a three-nave dome basilica with two aisles. The temple is decorated with large painted windows, ceramic tiles with different colors on the floors, copper dome covering. The Bell is 1,6 tons heavy.

The St. Nicholas Church is built in1865 and is also known as “the Seamen’s Church&rdquo

St. Petka Paraskeva Church was built in 1906.

The St. Athanasius Church was built in 1838.

The Saints Constantine and Helena Church as a part of the 14th century monastery with the same name.

The Regional Museum in Varna

The Archeological Museum houses the historical and archeological treasures of the city. The museum is situated in an impressive old school building, constructed in 1892-1898. The 2 150 m2 exposition area is divided into four main thematic sectors:

The Prehistory Halls display artifacts from the Neolithic Age, the Stone-Copper Age, the early Thracian culture, the Varna Eneolith necropolis where more than 3000 golden objects, along with numerous copper, flint, stone and marble articles were found during archeological researches in 1972 on the territory of the city.

Antiquity Halls display historical and archeological remains of the ancient Odessos during the Ages (from its establishment until the Early Christian Times).

Middle Ages Halls are showing the development of the Varna region for the period of the First Bulgarian Kingdom (7th - 11th centuries), the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (12th - 14th centuries) until 18th century.

Religious Arts Halls display a rich collection of icons (16th-19th centuries) and other religious items.

The Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum is located in the southern part of the Sea Garden. The museum halls display rich collection of ship remains, found on the Black Sea bottom, old anchors, uniforms of seamen and naval officers, flags, naval apparatuses and devices, torpedoes, etc. The exhibition is showing also the development of the naval and commercial fleet in Bulgaria.

Outside the museum building, there is an open-air exhibition showing the torpedo boat “Drazki” from the beginning of the 20th century which took part in the First Balkan War (1912 - 1913), torpedo and mine-sweeping cutters, a lot of anchors, boat cannons, sea mines, etc. There are also two helicopters which have served in the Bulgarian water-plane aviation.

The Ethnographic Museum

The Ethnographic Museum is located in a beautiful house, built in 1860. The exhibition presents the cultural and the every-day life of the people in the Varna region for the period from the 18th century until the beginning of 20th century. On the first floor are presented various items connected to the basic occupations of the population - pottery and containers for storing milk, meat and grains, tools for plowing and harvesting, fishing, wine-making, etc.

On the second floor there is a large collection of traditional costumes, ritual masks for different celebration, ornaments and jewelry.

On the third floor are presented four rooms typically furnished for the end of the 19th century.

The Varna Dolphinarium

The Dolphinarium is situated in the northern part of the Sea Garden. This is an unique attraction and one of the city symbols. Great number of visitors is coming here to watch the incredible Dolphin performances, including dancing and singing, acrobatics and balancing, games with the audience. The Dolphinarium has 1 200 sitting places and the pool is 15 x 12 m large and 6 m deep. There is also a nice cafeteria with 70 seats, situated in the eastern part of the building, having special underwater windows through which the dolphins can be observed. Astronomic Observatory and Planetarium

Astronomic Observatory and Planetarium is located in the Sea Garden. They were founded in 1968. The demonstration hall in the Planetarium has 80 seats. The hall is equipped with modern video and sound systems allowing the visitors to explore the depths of the Space and learn interesting facts about the Solar system and much more.

The Observatory is equipped with telescopes, binoculars and modern computer technologies which can be used by the visitors to observe the Sun, the Moon and the stars.

Nessebar Guide

The town of Nessebar is a Sea resort and is situated 36 km northeast of Bourgas.
Nessebar is one of the oldest towns in Bulgaria and Europe. It was founded 3200 years ago by Thracian settlers and was called Melsambria and later on - Mesembria. In our days, the town of Nessebar is divided into two parts - the Old town and the New town.
The Old town in Nessebar is declared a historical and architectural reservation and is a part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

Old Town of Nessebar

The Old Town of Nessebar is situated on a peninsula which is connected to the new town by a narrow isthmus. The old wooden wind-mill on the isthmus is the symbol of Nessebar.

On the territory of the Old town there were around 44 churches, built between 5th and 19th century. Nowadays, some of them are transformed into museums, others are restored and even operating, but the biggest part of them is only ruins. There are also remains of fortification walls which have surrounded the town ever since it was founded and remains of thermal baths dating from the Byzantine period.

The old town of Nessebar is a very romantic place with its narrow cobblestone streets, small squares, old two-storey houses, beautiful gardens and small souvenir shops. There are also a lot of small and not so small restaurants where you can enjoy delicious sea food and national Bulgarian dishes.

Monasteries, cathedrals and churches
in Nessebar

The Church of Christ Pantocrator was built around 13th-14th centuries and is one of the best preserved old Christian temples in Bulgaria. The church facade and the exterior walls are decorated with colorful arches, ceramics, floral ornaments and brick friezes. From the inside the temple was decorated with beautiful wall paintings, from which unfortunately there are only small fragments left. Nowadays, the building is used as Art Gallery.

St. Spas Church was built in 1609 from stone and mud. The building is very modest and small with a wooden roof and no bell tower and a dome. The walls inside are almost entirely covered with wall paintings. It is the only temple in Nessebar which was constructed during the Ottoman Rule.

St. Stefan Church (the New Metropolia) dates back to the 11th - 13th centuries.

St. Sofia Church (the Old Mitropolia) dates back to the 5th - 6th centuries and nowadays are only ruins left.

St. John the Baptist Church was built in the 11th century. Today the temple is transformed into a small archeological museum.

The Basilica “Holy Mother Eleusa” was built in the 6th century and nowadays are only ruins left but the remains are well preserved and partly restored.

The St. Demetrius Church was built in the 11th century as a small family temple. Now are only ruins left.

Church St. Archangels Michael and Gabriel was built in the 13th century.

The Church of the Holy Mother of God was built in 1873 and is the only temple in the old town which still operates.

Church of St. John Aliturgetos was built in the 14th century.

The St. Theodor Church was built in the 13th century. Nowadays, there is an art gallery inside.

The St. Paraskeva Church - built in the 13th - 14th century.

SOZOPOL GUIDE

Sozopol is located on the Southern Black Sea Coast, 35 km south of Bourgas. It is a very ancient town and one of the most famous Bulgarian Sea resorts. According to archeological researches, the first settlement on the territory of Sozopol grew up around 4th-3rd century BC. In year 610 BC was founded a Hellenic colony under the name Appolonia Pontica. Like Nessebar, Sozopol is divided into old part and new part. The Old town of Sozopol is located on a peninsula and is declared a historical and architectural reserve. This is one really wonderful place where past and presence intertwine with the endless blue sea and the century old figs are spreading their fragrance above the ancient wooden houses and the narrow cobblestone streets.

Architectural and Archeological Reservation “Antique Sozopol”

During the Middle Ages the town was surrounded by fortified walls and towers. Nowadays, fragments from the walls can be seen in the Old town, some of them reaching height of 3-4 m.

More than 180 old wooden houses are declared cultural monuments. They were built in the 18th - 19th centuries and represent the Bulgarian Revival architecture. Their structural design is specific for the region - stone foundations, brick walls with wooden boarding as a protection from the strong sea wind. The roof is covered with Turkish tiles. The typical old Sozopol house has two or three-stories, as the first floor was then used as a storage for tools and wine barrels.

St. Ivan Island

St. Ivan Island is the largest island in Bulgaria. It is situated at 1 km distance from Sozopol. The Island is declared a natural and archeological reserve. On its territory there is a lighthouse, designed by French architects and the remains of a monastery complex, which was built during the 5th-6th century. In the course of time, the monastery was destroyed and reconstructed several times. Today there are the ruins of: two churches, fortified walls with a gate, a library, a royal residence and some monastic sells on the island. Apart from the historical remains, the St. Ivan (St. John) Island is also a natural reserve, inhabited by some endangered and rare species. In 2010 during archeological excavations, the relics of Saint John - The Baptist were found on the island, which now are exposed in the Church of St. Cyril and St. Methodius in Sozopol. Although there are no organized tourist visits, the island is accessible by boat for everyone who has interests in visiting it.

The Ropotamo Reservation

The Ropotamo reservation is a natural reserve situated 15 km from Sozopol, between Sozopol and the town of Primorsko, on the two banks of the river “Ropotamo”. This is a place with undamaged nature, comprising rocky shores, dense forests, wide sand beaches, dunes, swamps and sea caves. It is inhabited by rare flora and fauna species, some of which are declared as endangered. The Ropotamo complex includes “The Arkutino swamp”, “The Water Lily reserve”, “The Snake Island”, the rock formation “Lion Head”, “Velyov Vir reserve”, “Stamopolu Swamp area”, the natural landmarks “Alepu Swamp” and the Sand Dunes.

Any kind of human activity is not allowed on the territory of the complex and tourist visits and walks can be made on specially marked paths and routes.

Anyway, there is a very nice and memorable attraction, organized during the summer months in the Ropotamo Reserve. You can make a trip by a boat along the Ropotamo River. The amazing natural sceneries and undamaged landscapes are priceless and worth seeing. After the one-hour tour the boat returns in its quay. There is a small nice bistro next to the quay where you can have a snack amongst the picturesque surroundings.

Monasteries, cathedrals and churches in Sozopol

There were about 20 Orthodox temples and 5 monasteries in Sozopol during the medieval times. The remains of some of them can be seen in the Ancient town. Nowadays, there are two churches which operate.

St. George Church was built in the 19th century. The church is still operating.

The Church of the Holy Mother of God was built in the 15th century - cultural monument.

The St. Cyril and St. Methodius Church was built in 1888. The relics of Saint John - The Baptist found on the Island of St. Ivan are exposed as a part of the Archeological exhibition, located in the temple.

The St. Zosim Church was built in 1857. The temple is operating.

The Archeological museum

In 1961 the building of the St. Cyril and St. Methodius temple is turned into a museum where the archeological materials and artifacts, found in Sozopol and the surroundings, to be stored and exposed. The museum collections display the history and the cultural traditions of the region from the 6th century BC until our days. There are two sections: Archeological and Christian Art.

What Beer to drink in Bulgaria?

Beer is one of the most popular drinks in Bulgaria. The history of beer dates back to the 19th century when foreign visitors introduced the beer in Bulgaria. Since then, the production and the consumption of beer in Bulgaria developed rapidly. Nowadays, Bulgaria takes the 25th place by beer consumption in the world, with around 60 liters per person per year.

There are around 13 beer breweries in Bulgaria producing about 580 million liters of beer annually. Today, most of them are owned by foreign companies like Carlsberg, Heineken and StarBev.

The beer brands brewed in Bulgaria have superb quality and excellent taste. Generally, there are two types of beer produced in Bulgaria - light beer (lager) and dark beer. The standard light lager is the most widely consumed beer, especially in the summer, due to its pleasant bitterness and refreshing qualities. The dark beer is sweeter with a slight caramel and dense malt taste and is more often consumed in the winter.

Here is a list with the most common nationwide beer brands in Bulgaria:

KAMENITZA Brewery is one of the leading beer producers in Bulgaria and recently celebrated its 130th anniversary. Since 2010 it is owned by the international company “StarBev Group”. The brewery supplies the following varieties to the market:

KAMENITZA is a light beer with low carbonation, malty aroma, medium bitterness and light sweetness. It has a rich taste, very drinkable and thirst-quenching. Produced from high-quality malt and carefully selected hops.

KAMENITZA DARK has a clear dark amber color; moderate malty and light hoppy aroma; sweet caramel and butter taste; moderate bitter and light sweet flavor. Produced from high-quality malt and special combination of aromatic bitter American and German hops.

KAMENITZA PSHENICHNO is a wheat white beer with predominantly wheat malt content. The combination of wheat and barley malt and the traditional hops makes it soft, fuzzy and very refreshing. This beer has a specific dull color which is due to the lack of filtration.

KAMENITZA FRESH LEMON is an unique combination between beer and fresh lemon juice with a low alcoholic content. It has a lemon and grapefruit juice aroma; medium sweet flavor and juicy lemon bitterness. Very refreshing and drinkable.

ASTIKA Fine Quality Lager is relatively new product on the market. Light beer with soft carbonation and malty and fruity aroma. Very drinkable, refreshing and thirst-quenching due to the perfect combination between sweetness and bitterness.

BECK’S is a licensed brand which is a part from the “Kamenitza” portfolio. The high quality German beer is produced according to the original recipe and technology, following the uncompromising superior German quality standards. The flavor is slightly herbal and malty; taste is somewhat bitter and hoppy.

STELLA ARTOIS is another “star” from the Kamenitza family, brewed under the license of the famous Belgian producer. It is made from the same natural ingredients and under the same technology as in the old days. This guarantees its supreme quality, full flavor and great and remarkable taste.

STAROPRAMEN is a Czech licensed beer, locally brewed by Kamenitza Brewery. In Bulgaria only the standard “light” beer is currently being produced. The original receipt and technology are strictly observed without any compromise in the quality. Staropramen has a distinguish taste and rich aroma, due to the high quality natural ingredients used in its production.

ZAGORKA Brewery has more than 100-years of history in the beer production. The brand is one of the leaders on the Bulgarian market. It is owned by the international company “HEINEKEN”. ZAGORKA produces the following varieties:

ZAGORKA SPECIAL is the most popular product of Zagorka brewery. It has a sparkling golden color, medium carbonation and thick creamy foam. Nice grainy and hops aroma, slightly sweet corn and barley malt flavor and a hit of bitterness. Very well balanced and highly refreshing taste.

ARIANA LAGER is a high quality beer, brewed according to an old Czech recipe from specially selected ingredients. Golden color, medium carbonation, light malty and hoppy aroma, good balance between bitterness and sweetness. Very drinkable, refreshing and thirst-quenching.

HEINEKEN in Bulgaria is locally produced by ZAGORKA Brewery under the license and strictly according to the famous Dutch recipe and technology. The premium quality of the locally brewed Heineken in Bulgaria is no way inferior to the original Dutch product. With its slight sweet hops aroma, medium carbonation and balanced bitterness, Heineken is extremely refreshing and thirst-quenching during the hot summer months.

STOLICHNO is a premium lager beer, the only “bock beer” produced in Bulgaria. It is made according to an original “Zagorka” recipe and characterizes with a dark red-brown color and granite glimmer. It has a higher alcoholic content, due to the longer fermentation process and maturing time, and the special selection of quality dark malts.

In 2002 two famous Bulgarian Breweries (the Shumen Brewery and the Pirin Brewery) become part of the Danish Concern CARLSBERG GROUP under the name CARLSBERG BULGARIA. The breweries supply the following varieties to the market:

SHUMENSKO PREMIUM is being produced according to the best Czech brewing traditions since 1882. Shumensko beer characterizes with pale golden color, mildly sweet and grainy aroma, low bitterness and hoppy flavor, medium carbonation. Very drinkable and refreshing.

SHUMENSKO DARK is brewed from specially selected caramel and coffee malts. The beer has an amber color, dense caramel and toast taste, well balanced moderate sweetness, light malty and hoppy aroma. The alcoholic content is 5.5%.

PIRINSKO beer has a fresh and light taste because it is produced in an ecologically pure mountain region from specially selected quality ingredients. It has a malty aroma, clear white foam, medium sweetness, light bitterness and average carbonation. Very refreshing and thirst-quenching.

CARLSBERG is a world-known beer product, famous for its exceptional taste and superb quality in more than 140 countries world-wide. Carlsberg is a light beer, with taste of wheat, hops and fruits. The bitterness of the hops and the sweetness of the summer fruits provide a perfectly balanced taste and aroma.

HOLSTEN is a locally brewed product under the license of the Holsten Brewery from Hamburg, Germany. The beer is being made strictly following the original recipe and in observation of the German purity law (Reinheitsgebot). This is a premise for the purity and the excellent taste of this beer for which production only the finest ingredients (water, hops and barley malt) are being used.

TUBORG GREEN is locally brewed under the license and original recipe of the Danish Brewery TUBORG, which is nowadays a part of the CARLSBERG Group. The beer is produced from bright roasted malts using a special fermentation technology which guarantees its mild, fresh taste and nice aroma. The balanced bitterness and the moderate carbonation make it highly refreshing and very drinkable.

Bourgas offers plenty of shopping opportunities and places. Interesting shopping destinations are the two central pedestrian streets - “Alexandrovska” Str. and “Bogoridi” Str.

“ALEXANDROVSKA” STREET is starting from the Bourgas train station main entrance and runs from north to south. There is a great variety of smart clothes and shoe shops, silver and gold jewelry shops, many cafes and restaurants, overlooking the main street.

SANDY BEACHES ON THE SOUTHERN BLACK SEA COAST

The Bulgarian Black sea coast is 378 km long and consists of a great number of beaches - they vary from small, secluded beaches (some of them even narrow and rocky) to wide and crowded beaches with fine golden sands. Here we give a list with the major and best known beaches on the southern Black sea coast -this is the peace of the coast line from Sveti Vlas in the north to Sinemorets in the south. The total distance between Sveti Vlas and Sinemorets is about 130 km, and here are the beaches we would reccommend.

Sveti Vlas

The town “Sveti Vlas” is a very popular and rapidly developing sea resort near Nessebar. The small town is lying directly on the Black sea coast, between the foothills of the mountain “Stara Planina”. It offers an unique combination of mountain freshness and Mediterranean climate. The beach is south-orientated and grants plenty of sunshine all day long. It has fine golden sands, clean blue water and safe sea bottom. The beach has free access to all guests and provides lifeguards, beach accessories (paid) and attractions (paid) such as sun parasols and loungers, banana ride, water jets, windsurf, paragliding, water wheel and many more. There are a lot of cafes and restaurants along the beach and a couple of medical centers.

About Sveti Vlas

Sunny Beach

The beaches of “Sunny Beach”complex are not a place for relaxation and rest.On the contrary, it is the ideal place for the nightlife lovers and entertainment seekers. The beaches are wide, crowded and noisy, with fine golden sand and clear water without algae, underwater rocks and reefs. The biggest part of the beach area has paid sun parasols and lounges. There are also free zones, but they are not large and insufficient. Available are various attractions like water jets, water-ski, windsurf, banana ride, water wheel, skydiving, paragliding, etc. Also plenty of beach cafes, restaurants, bars, discos are welcoming the tourists.

Nessebar

The beaches of Nessebar are 4 km long and are stretching to the north and south of the town. They have clear and shiny golden sand (the finest on the Black sea coast), calm crystal water and flat sandy sea bottom. Various leisure attractions like yacht and boat trips, fishing, skydiving, water sports, windsurf, water ski and water wheel, banana ride. The beaches are cleaned daily; there are lifeguards for your safety and great variety of cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs for carefree and pleasant vacation.

About Nessebar

Ravda

Ravda is small village between Nessebar and Aheloy. It offers three beaches: Central, South and Aurelia beach. Generally, the beaches are narrow and rocky and very crowded. In some areas, there are also rocks on the sea bottom. On the other hand, the village is very picturesque and tranquil, away from the noises and the crowds of the big resorts, offering plenty of restaurants and taverns, serving various international cuisine and fish specialties, pubs and beer bars. On the beaches there are a lot of fast-food kiosk and caravans with soft drinks, beer and grill.

Pomorie

The beaches of Pomorie have unique fine and soft black sand that is rich in iron and has healing qualities. The wide beach line is around 7 km long and stretches along the Pomorie Bay. The shallow and flat sea bottom without underwater rocks, reefs and cold streams is safe for swimming and bathing. The curative qualities of the mud, extracted from the Pomorie Lake are world-known. The resort offers full range of leisure and sport activities, amongst which the yachting and sailing are the most preferable. Pomorie is a wonderful place for family tourism because of its good infrastructure, the beautiful and safe beaches and the variety of cafes, restaurants, taverns, bars and pubs.

Sarafovo

Sarafovo was founded as a separate village, but nowadays it is transformed into a quarter of Bourgas. The place is picturesque and quiet and has 4 km long beaches. The village is located on the coast and offers a superb view of the entire Gulf of Bourgas. The beach line is wide and covered with soft and shiny fine sand, which contains iron, magnesium und manganese. Because of its location in the Gulf of Bourgas, the sea water is calm and very warm; the sea bottom is clean of rocks, flat and shallow - very suitable for small children and inexperienced swimmers. For your safety and pleasant experience, the beaches of Sarafovo are equipped with sun parasols and lounges (paid), lifeguard posts and a lot of beach cafes and small restaurants. Available are the full range of leisure attractions as water wheels, banana ride, water jets, water ski, windsurfs and paragliding.
