Sikon group

1/. I would just like to add our recommendation of Sikon Group (http://www.sikongroup.com) in Sofia since using them in July/August.

When we originally booked a few months ago via email we got very prompt and helpful advice from Yasen, who runs the company with his business partner (whose name I have forgotten, sorry!). Yasen even pointed out that I had asked to book the car for longer than I actually needed!

Our flight arrived in Sofia at a horrible time in the morning (about 1.30am) and Yasen met us from the flight and gave us a full run-down of the car and provided maps, driving directions to get on the Varna road from the airport, which is a bit tricky, and some very useful advice about driving in Bulgaria.

During our stay we were involved in a very minor prang with a Bulgarian driver, who had scraped by us on a very narrow road but decided it was our fault, and rang Yasen, who sorted it all out over the phone.

On the way home we dropped the car off at an even more awful time of the morning (around 4am) and Yasen and his partner were there to meet us, smiling and friendly.

The car was very reasonably priced and was absolutely no problem at all. I can’t recommend Sikon group enough, they are great value and very helpful, friendly and professional.

2/.I have used Sikon about a dozen times.1 car i used broke down about 320kms away from Sofia.I had a replacement within 4 hours.Have tried other car hire firms in the past but none can match this company and their prices.

3/. Been using Sikon for three years now 3 or 4 times a year, cannot speak highly enough about Yasen and his service. Get 10% discount from him as a regular customer. Sept hire 14 days Peugot estate 279 euros + 100 deposit (cash only) We had a breakdown last year and although Yasen was on holiday he insisted in bringing out a replacement car for us himself, was in VT in a couple of hours. Cars are always clean and well looked after and customers are treated like royalty.


4/. Totally have to recommend Sikon Car Hire in Sofia. Have used 3 other car hire companies before and have always had problems either with the car (handbrake defunct, broken lights, windows won’t open etc) or with the company not turning up on time or generally messing us around.

Sikon were VERY different. I 100% got the impression they cared about us as clients. We hired a Corsa which although old worked perfectly well and was clean. Total bonus - it was delivered to us with a full tank of petrol which was a first. The last thing you need is worrying about filling up late at night after a long flight. They also gave us 2 free maps of Sofia and Bulgaria. They were very clear that we didn’t need to worry about any bumps or scratches to the vehicle- we were just responsible for the tyres. When we returned the car they were there in the carpark waiting for us and after a quick hand over gave us a t-shirt as well. The price was good as well and got a 7% discount for having the MyBulgaria card. Definitely be using them again. www.sikongroup.com

Bogicars

Just thought I’d put on record that I used Bogicars after spotting the link to their website in Smiggy’s post earlier in this topic, and had no trouble at all with their service.

I was making my second visit to the Varna region - I’ve bought an apartment in Vanitsa, just above St Constantine - and fancied having a better look round the area, North, South, inland etc, than my first visit.

They were happy to bring the car to me at my Hotel in St. C and let me drop the car off at the Airport - someone was there to meet me and check everything over.

It cost me about £96 plus petrol for four days. I was lucky enough to receive a free upgrade as the car I’d pre-booked wasn’t available - Result!!

But, they quoted me 185 eoros for 5 days. Then after I emailed back and said I’d got a cheaper quote elsewhere - they asked me what was the best quote I’d been given, so that they could have a chance to match it.
I got the car (renault symbol) for 143 euros - which I work out to be @ £20 per day (includes pick up and drop off as Burgas airport) Which I thought was a fair price. Glad to say we had no problems at all. Car given was actually better then the one we booked. Swift, no messing about handback at Bourgas airport, and a promise of 10% discount if we use then again

How to tip right in restaurants and taxi in Bulgaria

Good service deserves a (good) tip. Tipping is welcome all over the world and so in Bulgaria. Tipping has become more popular and actually expected especially in the resorts and larger cities like Bourgas or Varna.

Tipping in restaurants, bars and coffee shops

Rules for tipping vary from country to country but everywhere tipping is expected for restaurants and bars. The waiting staff in Bulgaria usually gets paid at the minimum wage because they make up the rest of their salary in tips. 10% is a good tip in a restaurant, good meal at a good restaurant with good service should be tipped more..

It is rude no to tip the waiter as he lives from the tips. A service charge is NOT usually added to hotel and restaurant bills. The bill at the restaurant only charges for what you eat. The things on the following list should not impact your tipping. The waiter and waitress are not responsible for:

• Not getting your meal cooked properly
• The restaurant being out of your favourite dish
• The sanitation of the rest rooms
• Time spent in finding a parking space
• Having a conflict with another guests
• Having a bad day
• Having difficulty with your family
• Anything else beyond the human control of your waiter or waitress

These people should not be punished monetarily for something they can’t control. However, if their service is bad – you get the salad after the main meal – cut their tip but never, ever let it fall below five percent.

Tipping in taxi

Tipping a taxi driver is common but is still considered generous. 10% are usually enough but the taxi bill is usually much lower than a restaurant bill, so it depends. For example 1-2 Euros tip on a taxi bill of 8 Euros is 15-25%. This sounds much but it is still only 1-2 Euros. The tip can be larger if the taxi driver has helped carry bags, etc. You can tip him more for clean cab or good service.

Tips are very much welcomed in Bulgaria by people occupied in tourist industry. It’s a custom in Bulgaria for tour guides and drivers to be given a tip after the trip. But giving them small coins is considered as an insult. Hotel and restaurant staff accept tips, too.

In most of the cases the service staff have simply migrated to the location for the season and they are paying for rent and other expenses. They highly depend on the tips, since their basic salaries don’t even cover their transportation back and forth. You may also add €1 per day for the maid who provides extra service.


Tipping is a very personal thing. Everyone is different. Some people tip large, some small, and of course some not at all!!!


In Bulgaria a tip is not an obligation, but is appropriate for good service.

“Royal Villas” ist unsere neueste Ferienanlage - sie besteht aus nur 2 Ferienhäusern. Die Ferienhäuser sind einstöckig und haben 3 Doppelschlafzimmer, zwei Badezimmer und ein Wohnzimmer und vollausgestattete Küche. Die Gäste verfügen über einen großen Pool und einen überdachten Grillplätz. Von "Royal Villas" ist eine ganz schöne Aussicht bis nach Burgas und das Meer zu sehen.


Jedes der zwei Ferienhäusern bietet Platz für bis zu acht Personen. Die Fotos unter können einfach nicht genug erzählenn. Die Häuser und die Lage sin wunderschön und laden zur Entspannung ein. Der Ort ist super für Familienurlaub in Bulgarien.

Cost of your holiday in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a cheap holiday destination, with low-cost accommodation and with cheaper prices of goods and services.

Below is comparison of the 10 cheapest and 10 most expensive holiday countries in the world.

According to the table above Bulgaria is placed as the 7th cheapest country in the world for holiday makers. What you propably don’t know is that Bulgaria in fact is a Euro coutry. The exhange rate for the Bulgarian currency called Lev is fixed at 1.95583 Lev for 1 Euro.

It seems the time is bad for holiday in the euro countries - the cost of holidaying abroad has shot up when spending Pounds. For a certain ammount in Pounds you could have 4 beers last summer (2008) and 3 beers only this summer (2009).

Not necessary! The first two holiday countries in the list are Hungary and the Czech Republic. These are not the typical countries where you would like to spend the family holiday with your family, even if they are a bit cheaper (only because of their current currencies devaluation). The next cheap holiday countries are Thailand, South Africa and Malaysia. Their problem is they are pretty far away from home and you will be spending thousands for the flights only.

Bulgaria

The strongest tourist attraction of Bulgaria – apart from its beautiful nature – is the cost of the holiday, which is affordable for almost everybody.

People coming from Western Europe the prices will find that the majority of the costs for holidaymaking in Bulgaria – for accommodation, eating out, transport and services are significantly lower than those that they are used to. This fact makes Bulgaria with those looking for an affordable family holiday at reasonable cost. Why paying EUR 6 for a cocktail in Spain when you could have it in Bulgaria for only the half of it.

Bulgaria is a cheap holiday destination, not only because of the lower cost of the accommodation, but because of the over-all cheaper prices. All local products in Bulgaria – like vegetables, meat & milk (and their products), drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) - are at least a third of what you would pay for similar item in UK, Germany or France. Only imported items carry significant cost.

Holiday makers who like to eat out will find that restaurants in Bulgaria server great food at low cost, especially if you avoid the typical tourist restaurants. How to recognize the tourists restaurants – look inside before you enter them and if you see 100% tourists inside, then you can be sure these are for tourists.

Brand new mini-golf course of 9 holes - exclusive for our guests only

For our holiday guests seeking relax and fun on their vacation in Bulgaria we have built for 2009 a brand new minigolf course of 9 holes next to the pool in “Sunny Hills Villas”. Our minigolf course is built of concrete lanes with soft felt carpet (artificial grass) and brick walls. The game is based on the basic putting skills only: force, direction, and break control. We are not using special golf balls on our course; in fact we are playing with one ball only, which have the purpose of equalizing the chances of all players. As we do not expect a lot of experienced players our obstacles and playing lines are not optimized for competition players of highest skill level. We believe our mini-golf course together with the other activities will offer you many pleasant moments so enjoy playing your favorite game during your summer holiday in Bryastovets.

We would like to bring to your attention some specific worldwide international minigolf playing rules and to give you some practical advices about playing minigolf.

Sunny Hills Villas mini-golf course has 9 holes each numbered from 1 to 9. Minigolf is played with ball and putter.

Our lanes are designed very attractive – their length is 7-9 meters with different shapes and obstacles between the teeing-off area and the hole. The diameter of the hole is 110 mm.

Specific sportswear is not required when playing minigolf having in mind you are on a holiday so you are free to play wearing your bathing suit in slippers or barefoot. You can take a cold beer with you from your villa’s fridge because drinking beer while playing is allowed.


The minigolf accessories - balls and putters - that are at your disposal are ordered and delivered from the UK. They cover all requirements being purchased from a company that trades with such sports accessories. Anyway you may play with your own putters and balls if you were ‘flying” together.

Order of play
Each hole is played with one ball only - e.g. all players play with one ball, one by one, and move to the next hole when the ball has been placed in the hole by each player. It is not allowed to play with two balls at the same time at one hole.

Readiness to play
The official minigolf rules say each player has about a minute in preparation for a stroke. You are not obliged to keep this rule strictly because anyway you are on a holiday and having fun is the most important thing.
A stroke is played when a player, in readiness to play, brings the putter into contact with the ball, thereby setting it in motion (the ball leaves its resting position).

Scoring
Each stroke counts as a point. If the ball still has not been holed after six strokes, another (penalty-) point is added. The maximum points per hole is limited therefore up to 7 points only.

Teeing-off and placement of the ball
The first stroke is to be played from the teeing-off area to the different hole in as few strokes as possible. Subsequent shots are to be played from where the ball has come to rest. When the ball somehow leaves the playing area it is played from the point where it left the playing area. Each stroke counts as a point and has to be entered in the score card.


When the ball comes to rest close to an obstacle or to the border and its position is not suitable for a stroke it can be moved but not further than 20 cm. in distance and at 90 degrees.

A holed ball
A ball is deemed to have been holed when it comes to rest in the hole. If the ball leaves the hole due to a strong stroke it counts as an incorrect.

The path of the ball
You are allowed to touch the ball (for cleaning for example) in supervision of your fellow players and remembering the exact location of the ball. You are also allowed to clean up your lane before the stroke.

Score-keeping
Players are not allowed to keep their own scores that is why a player’s score is kept by his/her playing partner or by a scorekeeper.

Each stroke should be marked as it is played with a Line ( | ) or slash ( / ) in the appropriate box.
Third and subsequent strokes may be marked with a shaded triangle . Aces should be flagged
up by a single straight line ( ^__________ ) drawn across the remaining empty boxes for that hole.

The Winner
The winner is the player with the lowest total number of points. In the event of a tie the winner is decided by a sudden death play-off. It starts at hole nr. 1 and on the next holes until there is a difference in the players’ scores. Players alternate the playing order at each next hole.

According to the rules you are not allowed to practice and roll the boll on the lanes after the game starts. Only one stroke is permitted before that and it is not scored. You may not strictly stick to this rule and you are free to specify the regulations with your partners in advance. The choice is yours so is the beer.

All players have to keep the lanes in good order and to protect the equipment from damage.

Needing to build or renovate a property in Bulgaria?

Swimming Pool Construction & Maintenance

Having your new home in mind probably you should think of buying an in-ground concrete swimming pool.

A pool without a doubt increases the value of your property and makes it more desirable for holiday seekers. There are many ways to build a pool but we recommend the approved technique of concrete shell with glass mosaic tile finish. We also recommend to build the pool while building (renovating) your house. The excavator will need some space to work and although the builders work in a very clean and professional manner some damage on your garden (paths, plants) may be inevitable.
