Holiday Resorts on the Bulgarian Black sea coast

There are many holiday resorts, small towns and cities along the Black sea coast in Bulgaria where you can rent a holiday villa. All of these places are perfect for spending a summer holiday with your family in Bulgaria. While not everybody will fancy each of these places we are sure that you will find at least one place that you will fall in love with and will come back to spend a holiday in Bulgaria. You will find some of these holiday locations on the Activities page, where the places of interest are limited to the nearest (to our villas) towns and attractions only. Here we prepared a list with all holiday places on the Black seas coast, hopefully this would help you to get an idea about the holiday options you would have on the Bulgarian Black sea coast.

First you should know that the Bulgarian Black sea coast is divided by South and North from the Balkan Mountains. The major city on the North Black sea coast is Varna and the major city on the South Black sea coast is Bourgas. Respectively there are two airports to get to your holiday destination in Bulgaria - Varna Airport and Bourgas Airport.

Black sea coast - SOUTH

Sunny Beach: Party town image

Sunny Beach is the biggest and most popular resort in Bulgaria, blessed with the longest and widest beach on the coast. It’s also very clean, with a Green Flag award to prove it. The resort itself with its maze of winding streets is a short distance from the beach, which is lined with hotels. There’s something for everyone here, including watersports, mini golf, aqua park, bars, restaurants and discos. Despite of the party town image Sunny Beach is actually an area with a huge amount of cultural and historic interest.

Nessebar: Commercial

Southeast of Sunny Beach is the town of Nessebar, a UNESCO world heritage site. Set on a rocky islet connected to the mainland by a tiny road, it’s the beautiful old wooden houses, cobblestone alleyways, museums and medieval churches that have put the little town on the map. High season brings a deluge of souvenir shops and coach tours.

Sozopol: Genuine charm

This ancient town on a narrow peninsula is what Nessebar must have once been like, before the invasion of low-end commercial mass-tourism. There are quite a few cozy lounge bars in the cobblestone alleys that weren’t there 20 years ago, but otherwise the traditional wooden houses are being refurbished, the ambiance is laid back, several of the restaurants have a nice ocean view and there are two great beaches here. A few kilometres further south there are sandy (dune) beaches that stretch for several kilometres.

Sveti Vlas: For families

Sveti Vlas is a quiet little town by the sea five kilometres north of Sunny Beach, full of Bulgarian charm. Some nice hotels, a few restaurants and several small beaches.

Obzor: Footnote

Half way between Varna and Burgas is tiny Obzor with 2,000 inhabitants (wintertime). It is a scruffy little town with a few restaurants lining a square and a few insignificant Roman ruins. But there is a nice sandy beach.

Elenite: Mainstream

This purpose-built resort in a bay is famous for its therapeutic waters, pretty well run and a sedate place in the summer. Hotels are scattered through a forest that runs alongside a long sandy beach. If you are looking for quiet nights stay here and take the bus to Sunny Beach in search of party.

Primorsko: Cheap and noisy

A cozy and relatively undeveloped town on the southern part of the Black sea coast that mainly attracts tourists from Bulgaria and Eastern Europe. The city has a long beach with shallow water. Most tourists stay in self-catering accommodation, but there are gigantic hotels near the beach. There is good shopping, the food is authentic and there are several bars with cozy sofas to hang out on and sip cheap drinks. You can choose between swimming in quiet waters or big waves.

Tsarevo: Sleepy

A dustier, sleepier version of Primorsko, Tsarevo used to be the favourite holiday destination for the Bulgarian royal family. Now popular mainly with Eastern European budget holidaymakers.

Black sea coast - North

Golden Sands: Modern

Golden Sands competes with Sunny Beach for the title of best beach resort and attracts both older visitors that prefer resting by the pool, families with children that enjoy the beach and Scandinavian youths that party all night long. Golden Sands is more like any other seaside resort in Europe than any of the other Bulgarian resorts - for good and bad.

Balchik: Mini beaches

Further north, the small unspoilt town of Balchik lines a mountainside along the beach. This holiday spot is popular with families with children, who crowd the tiny beaches. The sandy beaches here are man-made, but there are stretches of rocky shoreline and jetties to swim off. The main tourist sight is a royal summer residence with a large botanical garden.

Albena: Car-free

Partly car-free, the purpose-built holiday town of Albena was built in the late 1960s and is easily recognizable by its pyramid shaped hotels. One of the more expensive resorts on the coast, the hotels are spread out over a large green area by the sea.

It is very quiet here, with a nice beach, great watersports, and nearby historical villages and picturesque coastline. It feels like a resort for pensioners who want a quiet time and nothing to do.

Sveti Konstantin: Relaxed

Sveti Konstantin is the beach resort just nine kilometrews from the port city of Varna, the third biggest city in Bulgaria and one of the most attractive cities in the country. Here modern, stylish hotels are appearing at record speed along the beaches. A pleasant place, but mainly popular with locals taking a weekend break from Varna.

Good to know:

Stay: There has been a surge in new holiday properties in the past 10 years and the standard is pretty good. There are also many private holiday villas to let.

Eat: The Bulgarian cuisine is influenced by the Turkish, Greek and Serbian disches with meze, salads and grilled dishes. Beer is cheap and some Bulgarian wine is very good value.

Speak: Bulgarian. In tourist resorts most people speak English and German.

Shop: Handicrafts, leather ware, clothes, wine and spirits are cheap.

Plan: In July and August the beaches are crammed with tourists. The summer season lasts from June to early September.

Renting a villa in Bulgaria

Once you have decided that you will be spending your summer holiday in Bulgaria you are faced with the question where exactly to book your holiday villa. While holiday rentals were quite uncommon in Bulgaria there are now many privately owned properties being offered for rent across the whole country.

Where to rent a villa in Bulgaria

It is very unlikely that you find a holiday villa in Bulgaria that is in a walking distance to the beach. By walking distance is meant 500 to 1000 meters, this about 7 to 15 minutes walk in sun. This is simply because the land next to sea is extremely expensive. The coast line of Bulgaria has a length of only about 300km (in contradistinction to Greece where it is 16 000 km long). That is why there have been built almost only apartment buildings in the sea resorts of Bulgaria – mainly in Sunny Beach together with the surrounding places, like Nessebar, Ravda, Aheloy, etc. Detached villas in are rare in those places and and there is almost no point to look for a villa there. You would have more luck finding an apartment there – the supply is vast, but the quality might not be what you are looking for. Sunny beach and Nessebar are noisy places where the party goes 24h a day outside and inside, and sleeping at night is sometimes simply not possible. We don’t say these places are bad it is more a word of warning. If you consider renting an apartment in Bulgaria contact the owner and ask for contacts of previous guests. There is nothing better that the live chat with someone who has been there.

The coast line of Bulgaria has a length of only about 300km

A few kilometers away from the coast it gets much better and the number of villas being offered for rent is larger and there is plenty of choice for the holidaymaker. Villas to rent are to be found mainly inside of villages along the Bulgarian Black sea coast. From the north of Varna to the south of Bourgas. You will find private villas with or without swimming pool, from 4 to 60 kilometers away from the sea. Detached, semi-detached, terraced, in a development, in a filed in the middle of nowhere even in a whole brand new built small town. There is something for anybody as we say in Bulgaria.

They are set in the small and quiet village of Bryastovets, about 20km from the city of Bourgas and about 25 km away from Sunny Beach and the Black sea. Royal Villas

These two brand new villas are sharing a private swimming pool and a BBQ. The plot is big enough to ensure you privacy and also you will have a direct view to your children especially when they are in the pool or at the kids’ playground. The BBQ provides enough space and you may prepare your steaks on the grill there without disturbing the other party.
Although the villas are offered to sleep six they could accommodate up to 8 people if there are some small children in the group. These villas will suit best if rented simultaneously by two friendly families or parties. This would is the perfect holiday facility – it offers privacy & comfort for you desired holiday in Bulgaria.

Meadow View Villas

Meadow View Villas is a holiday community of four detached villas, with a well sized swimming pool and a BBQ but note the fact only two of the villas are offered for rent at this stage. Both villa complexes – Royal Villas and Meadow View Villas are 10m distance from one another only separated by a street. Have this in mind if your group is larger and take the possibility to rent villas in both complexes.

Sunny Hills Villas

Sunny Hills Villas – our biggest villa complex consisting of 16 villas. They occupy the area of 10 000 sq.m. and once you are here you may feel like being in a closed park area amid lots of greenery, fresh air, peace and birds’ warbling. Although there are 16 villas on site no more then 8-10 villas are being rented at the same time so the capacity of this complex never exceed 8-10 families besides the site is big enough to provide privacy. There are five different entrances from the street to the villas which comfort the tenants.
The two BBQs are quite big and very comfortable for outside eating. The swimming pool is large enough with crystal clean water and it is a great pleasure to swim and to chill in during the summer heat.
Kids’ playground is in close proximity to both the swimming pool and the BBQ thus you will be able take a look at the children while you are swimming or having a beer at the BBQ.
The minigolgolf fans are very welcome because there is a 9-hole minigolf course in Sunny Hills Villas and you will have the opportunity to play your favorite game during your holiday here.
There are some minigolf courses in Sunny Beach but they are being used from all holidaymakers not only in Sunny Beach but from the whole area around so they are always very busy.
Here, in Sunny Hills Villas you may relax and play golf with friends away from the crowds.

Best time for holiday in Bulgaria?

We would like to give you some advices on how to choose the best time for visiting us in order that you spend a wonderful holiday in our villas.
Naturally this may be helpful if you have the possibility to make your own choice when and where you will be on a holiday and how to organize it in advance.

Bulgaria has four separate seasons – winter, spring, summer and autumn and their duration does not always coincide with the astronomical one. The following table shows the average min. and max. temperatures for Bourgas.

May

Practically, the beginning of the summer season in Bryastovets starts from May and it usually lasts by the middle of October. In May, the average daily temperature is around 21º C, it is sunny but rain is not an exception. The temperature of the sea water is around 16-18º C and it is not very suitable for swimming in the sea.
Water in our pools is 20-22º C in May and these temperatures are quite pleasant for bathing or short swimming but staying in the water for too long is not recommended. Instead you may lie on the sun lounges by the pool especially by lunch time and in the afternoons and enjoy the good weather. This month of the year will suit to those of you who do not bear the summer heat during July and August and who prefer walking in the nature and exploring the area, traveling by car to different destination and be sure this area has lots to offer and all close by.


As May is still the beginning of the summer season the roads are not so busy and driving can be very pleasant. It is essential to hire a car while staying in Bryastovets because this will give you the opportunity to make trips in the region and even to travel to more distant destinations that are worth seeing. If you are a fan of this kind of holiday and you wish to explore Bulgaria we can assure you that this is just the right time. Our prices in May are much cheaper in comparison with the rental prices in the high season. The money that you save can be spent on trips to Bourgas and shopping or in the restaurants and pubs in Sunny Beach and why not on hiring a larger car that will make your journey much more comfortable.

June

We think June is the best month for spending a holiday in Bryastovets. The average daily temperatures vary between 23-27º C; the water in the pools is around 23-25º C and the temperature in the evenings is around 20ºC, it can get up 15ºC cold in the night - this is perfect for a good night’s sleep. During the days the sun is shining all day long and you may stay in and by the pool longer. Some short rain could be expected, but it never rains for days. Usually the ground is dry on the next day. Greenery is all around, you can feel the fresh air. A walking trip around the village is a good idea. The sea is 20 min. away by car and the temperature of the sea water is around 22-24º C in June. Due to the fact that the summer season is still in its very beginning, the beach, the restaurants and the streets in Sunny Beach are not crowded with people. Although June is perfect for a summer holiday our rates are still cheaper than in July and August. We keep the rental rates low in June because our villas are not fully booked yet as in the high season and we aim to attract more guests. The saved money can be used for much more pleasant things such as having lunch or dinner in some of the local pubs, or drinking beer (550 ml) that is really cheap here. Food and drinks are also at very reasonable prices – average price 8-9 Levs for dinner per person in the local pub. This is no joke.

Annual Temperature in Bourgas

July and August

July and August are considered as “high season” months. Most of the foreign tourists use to take their holidays in the heat of the summer; the children are off school so for millions of people this is the best time for having a holiday. All Bulgarian summer resorts are overcrowded especially Sunny Beach.
The daily average temperatures in Bryastovets vary between 30-33º C and around 24-25º C in the evenings. However the temperatures in Bryastovets differ from the temperatures in the area – in the village they are lower mainly in the nights while in Sunny Beach or in Bourgas for example the temperatures in July and August are some degrees higher.
The village’s location in the Eastern part of Balkan Mountain enables the movement of the air masses from the sea to the upcountry (the so called sea breeze) and this in combination with the fact that the village lies about 300 m. above the sea level is the reason for its favorable climate.
So you have the opportunity to swim and to bathe in our pools during the whole day (tº of the water 25-29º C) or simply to relax enjoying the sunshine; in the evenings when it becomes cooler a walk in the village followed by a dinner at the BBQ is a perfect option to end the day. Drinking spirits in the nights will not make you feel hot due to the cooler evenings in Bryastovets but anyway be careful what and how much you drink to avoid a headache in the morning.

You can also make daily trips to Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Pomorie and Bourgas for sightseeing or shopping. Night life there never stops so the numerous restaurants, pubs and bars are at your disposal.

The advantage of our villas is that if you wish to have calm and relaxing holiday combined with peace and fresh air while reading a book by the pool, instead of more active holiday be sure that here in Bryastovets no one will bother you.
This will not be possible if you are staying in a hotel in Sunny Beach or in any other resort on the Black sea coast where tranquility and peace is the last thing that could be found.

Spetember

And finally here comes… September – it is quite similar to May but there are some certain differences mainly related with nature. It is not so green and fresh although in Bryastovets you will not feel it because the greenery in our villa complexes is maintained within the whole season. In Bulgaria, September is also the month in which lots of seasonal fruits and vegetables ripen. Many of them are ecologically clean, their taste is unique and it has nothing in common with the fruits and the vegetables you are used to. Do not miss to try them!
Summer season in Bulgaria may not be too long (4-5 months) but our country has a lot to offer – sea, sun, beautiful nature and friendly people.

Bulgaria is Nr.4 in top 10 world travel recommendations for 2010

A recent article in Scottish main newspaper “The Scotsman” placed Bulgaria on 4th place in the top 10 travel destinations for 2010.On the first 3 places are resp. KYOTO, MOROCCO and SOUTH AFRICA. The other recommended travel places are 5 ISTANBUL, 6 NEPAL, 7 EL SALVADOR, 8 NICARAGUA, 9 SURINAME (South America’s smallest country), 10 ICELAND.

We are pleased to see Bulgaria on the list with the top 10 travel destinations and number 4 is a an excellent position for our small country. Current population of Bulgaria is 7. 6 Mio people as of Dec 2008, just for comparison the population of Istanbul is 12.7Mio people.

“The Scotsman” determines Bulgaria as “Europe’s best-kept secret” thanks to the 45 years of communism in the country. The newspaper is praising the beautiful nature of Bulgaria with its mountains and the long coastal line. As a family holiday location they recommend the beach resorts in Bulgaria and especially the resort of Sunny Beach.

Bulgaria is a democratic country since 1989 and major improvement in the standard of life has been recorded since then. Bulgaria first came on the radar for foreign property investments in the period 2003 – 2004. This started an incredible building boom and many new holiday developments were built and also steadily increasing numbers of foreign tourists has been seen since.

The resort of Sunny Beach has been expanded enormously in the past few years with new hotels, apartment buildings and many purpose-built smaller resorts inside and in the surroundings. The resort is a home of over 800 hotels and more than 300 000 beds. It has hundreds of restaurants and bars and a night clubs for every taste. Bulgaria offers an excellent value for money especially and this was confirmed in hard times when the cash is short. Summer 2009 was a good season for the Bulgarian tourism branch; despite the decreasing amount of holiday makers in Europe in general, confirming that Bulgaria is a wonderful location where the holidaymakers get the best value for their hard earned money.

Newly built 3-bedroom detached villa for Rent in the beautiful village of Bryastovets (in Bourgas, Bulgaria)

The villa is only 20 - 25 min drive to the city of Bourgas or to Sunny Beach.

The villa is tastefully furnished and well maintained. On your arrival you will find the villa clean and prepared for your holiday. The villa has its own garden and private pool sized 9 x 5m. The garden and the pool are maintained by us on a daily basis and all you need is to relax and enjoy the time with your family.


The villa is decorated in neutral colors and equipped with all you would need on a holiday.
Downstairs there is a large living room with open plan kitchen fitted with electric hob, electric oven, extractor, fridge, freezer and a washing machine in a separate wet room. All rooms are with terracotta tiling. A sitting area with garden furniture in front of the house is accessed from the living room, a second door leads from the kitchen into the garden.

An internal stairs with beautifully designed metal rail leading to the second floor where the three double bedrooms are disposed, each one with access to a terrace. There is one master bedroom with en-suite shower and toilet room. There is a second bathroom on the floor for the other two bedrooms.

The plot is fairly large and beautifully landscaped. The swimming pool is placed behind the house; it is hidden away from the people walking on the street, ensuring your full privacy. The pool is serviced by our staff twice a day thus saving any unpleasant efforts while on a holiday. There are six deck chairs at your disposal within the pool sitting area.

Walking distance to couple of small local shops and bars. The villagers are lovely and friendly. In the village you will be able to experience the real Bulgaria in its charming and relaxing way.

You are still very close to the sea by car and the big city of Bourgas and the international airport.

Car is essential!

Allthough there is a small shop and several food serving bars in the village a car is a must for your holiday. Passports. Check everyone has one, knows where it is, and that it’s in date. Many countries require at least six months left on your passport before letting you in, so check this in plenty of time.


Insurance. Whatever type of holiday you’re taking - whether it’s a package deal or you’ve booked flights and accommodation independently, you should always get travel insurance. Don’t forget to get your free Euro Health Card (EHIC) form from your local Post Office. This entitles you to free or reduced cost health treatment anywhere in the EU.


Paperwork. Organise all of your holiday documents in to one main folder and then make photocopies of passports and insurance for each person to put in their luggage so you’re prepared if these items get lost.


Clothes. Whil’s a good idea to pack for every eventuality, this doesn’t mean you have to take an entire wardrobe! One waterproof, one jumper, one pair of trousers and trainers will suffice in case of bad weather on a sume itmer holiday, for example, then a few key staples to see you through. You do not need a completely different outfit every day for each family member.



Additionally:
Toiletries - wet wipes and tissues can be a lifesaver when travelling with small children! Mobile phone charger and plug adaptors. Digital camera, plus charger. Things to keep the children entertained on the journey (see our top tips in the next section). A small first aid kit (plasters, insect repellent, antiseptic cream and painkillers). Sweets to chew or suck on the plane journey, or earplugs to reduce pain. Sunscreen and after sun.

Finally, don’t get too stressed about packing. As long as everyone has their passport and tickets, if you do forget something you can usually buy it at the airport or on holiday, and most of the time you’ll find you didn’t really need it anyway!

One of the great things about holidays is the chance to enjoy mealtimes together, but don’t fall into the trap of preparing every single meal like you do at home! A key benefit of self-catering is that it gives you the flexibility to eat in OR out, so save money by eating at home during the day, so can you treat yourselves with some nice dinners out. Limit the cooking by stocking up on fresh bread, croissants, cold meat, fruit and cheeses etc… for breakfast and lunch, and let the family graze on whatever they like during the day and see to themselves!


In addition, if your accommodation has a BBQ, make the most of it! Even if Dad never goes near the kitchen at home, you can bet he’ll be dying to fire up the BBQ and try his hand at being Jamie Oliver, so let him do the work for a change!

With a population of some 300,000 , Bourgas is the second largest city on the Black Sea coast but its main attraction is without doubt the sea. With its international airport, Bourgas is a great starting point for visiting the southern coast.

In the centre of Bourgas you will find the lovely St Cyril and St Methodius Cathedral which contains some beautiful frescos. It is the most important Bulgarian Orthodox church in Burgas.

Right behind the St Cyril and St Methodius Cathedral you will find the Ethnographic Museum in Bourgas. It is located in a house built in 1873, which is now a cultural monument. It has some fabulous exhibits including kukeri masks, traditional costumes, fabric and embroidery.

The Museum of Nature and Science has an exhibition of plants from the Strandzha region, and houses over 1,200 exhibits of insects and reptiles.

There is also a delightful Art Gallery displaying art by renowned Renaissance artists.

The Sea Garden - Located next to the sea up on a hill, this is a great place for a relaxing walk. Here you will find flowers, shaded paths and sculptures. The park covers a few kilometres and encompasses an open air theatre, small zoo, casino and several cafes and restaurants. The main Bourgas beach is found just down the garden steps.

Bourgas is not short of restaurants and bars either! Often they offer live music too. You will probably be spoilt for choice. Eating out in Bourgas is pretty reasonable cost-wise. If you want somewhere to sit and watch the world go by, then head for one of the numerous cafés on the tree-lined Aleksandrovska Street.

Bulgaria is one of the oldest wine makers in the world with traditions in both the grape growing and wine making. There are evidence for wine making in the land of Bulgaria from the Stone age: Thracians, Romans, Greeks, Slavs and Bulgarians used to know the excellent alcoholic product made of grape. As a fact Bulgaria ranked fourth in the world wine production in the late 1970s.

Wine regions in Bulgaria:

Grapes are thrived in all parts of Bulgaria. For administrative reasons the vineyards have been grouped into five regions.

Northern Region - The Danube plain north of the Balkan mountain.

This area has long and hot summer season and long and cold winter season. The area produces red and white wine (e.g. the Suhindol, Russe and Svishtov wineries). Grown varieties are Muscat Ottonel, Chardonnay, Aligote form the white wines and Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamza and Merlot from the red wines.

Eastern Region - The Black sea coast.

The region which is affected by the climate from the Black sea produces mainly white wine. The summer months are not very hot, the winter is mild and the autumn is long with lots of sunshine. Grown varieties are: Dimyat, Muscat Ottonel, Traminer, Ungni Blanc, Riesling.

Sub-Balkan Region - Rose Valley

The region between the south slopes of the Balkan mountain and Sredna Gora Mountain. The Balkan acts a natural barrier for the cold air coming from north, which helps for higher average annual temperatures. Wines: Rkaciteli, Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Misket, Merlot.

Southern Region – Trakia lowlands

The climate in this area is superb for red wine growing and that is why the area is best known for its red wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Mavrud. The red wined from this Bulgarian region have pleasant deep flavor and rich aroma.

South-Western Region (Struma river valley)

The smallest wine growing region in Bulgaria along the Struma river valley. Producing mainly red wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the local variety Wide Melnik Vine (in the region of the town of Melnik ).

LOCAL VARIETIES / BULGARIAN WINE

GAMZA

Gamza is an old local variety, cultivated in northern Bulgaria from old times. In Hungary, Slovakia, France, Romania, Yugoslavia, Austria and Turkey it is known as ‘Kadarka’. Until recently it was a basic wine variety for the production of red wines in the northern vine-growing region. In other parts of the country it is cultivated as single vines in plantations.

Gamza is a comparatively late-ripening variety - its vintage is at the end of September and at the beginning of October. When the variety ripens, it reaches 19-21.8% sugar content. In Vidin District the accumulation of sugar is more intense and the technological maturity occurs earlier - around 15th September. If the autumn is warm and dry, the red wines produced from Gamza typically have a vivid but not very dense ruby colour, a pleasant taste of small red fruits dominated by raspberry and a distinct but mild freshness and pleasant tannins.

MAVRUD

Mavrud is an old local variety, cultivated only in Bulgaria from old times. It is spread namely in the Plovdiv District and less in the Pazardjik and Stara Zagora Districts.
Mavrud is a late ripening variety - in the Plovdiv region the grapes ripen at the beginning of October. Deep, fresh alluvial soils in the warm micro regions of the country, where there is no danger of low winter temperatures, are the most appropriate ones for it.
Mavrud is one of the most valuable local Bulgarian varieties for the production of red wines. The wines produced from this variety have a deep ruby colour, enough tannin and acids in reserve and a typical pleasant flavour in which one can detect the taste of tendrils and blackberry. The wines develop perfectly when they are in contact with oak wood and acquire a strong, complex flavour with a mild, dense and harmonious taste.

MISKET CHERVEN (Red wine)

This variety has been cultivated on Bulgarian territories since ancient times and it is considered to be an old Bulgarian variety. It is spread mainly in the sub-Balkan Valley and Sredna Gora - the Sungurlare Valley, and the Karlovo and Brezovo districts. There are smaller plantations in the Stara Zagora, Sliven, Yambol and Vratza districts. Hilly, airy regions are appropriate for it. Misket cherven is the most frost-resilient variety among the local varieties and it surpasses many foreign vine varieties, too.
The wines have a straw-yellow colour, a harmonious taste and a pleasant Misket flavour. The famous white dry Euxinograd wines are produced when the variety is mixed with Dimyat and Italian Riesling.

PAMID

This is very old local variety, which has been cultivated in Bulgaria since the times of the ancient Thracians. In the past it was the most widely spread variety in Bulgaria. Today its plantations are highly limited. It is also cultivated in the former republics of Yugoslavia, Albania, and Turkey (around Odrin), Greece, Hungary and Romania.
Pamid is a middle-ripening variety - the vintage is around the middle of September. Its fertility is excellent. Grapes with best quality are cultivated in hilly areas with light drained soils.
This grape is prefered for fresh consumption. The wines are red, light table wines for mass consumption. They have low acidity and low extract and that is why they are not appropriate for maturing and should be consumed young, right after fermentation and clarification.

SHIROKA MELNISHKA LOZA (Red wine from Melnik)

This is an old local variety that has been cultivated since ancient times in the region of Melnik, which is where its name comes from. It is cultivated only in Bulgaria - a limited region in the Blagoevgrad District, around the town of Sandanski, Melnik, Petrich and the villages of Hursovo, Marikostinovo, Kapatovo, Vinogrady, etc.
Shiroka melnishka loza is a late ripening variety. It acquires its valuable qualities only in the Melnik micro region, distinguished for its high temperature sum during vegetation, an early spring, a hot summer, a long, warm autumn and a comparatively mild and warm winter. The vintage usually starts in the first half of October.
The young wines are distinguished for their dense cherry colour, their intense flavour dominated by cherry, enough density and a typical piquant tartness. They develop well in contact with oak wood. When the wines produced from this variety mature, they have a rich, complex flavour in which one could distinguish interesting nuances of tobacco and leather; the wine taste preserves its freshness and mild tartness.

INTERNATIONAL VARIETIES

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

This variety comes from France and is considered to be the most prestigious variety for the production of red wines. It is cultivated in all vine-growing and wine-producing countries and it occupies around 10% of the world vine plantations. It is one of the five varieties of Bordeau wines and it prevails over some micro regions - Grav and Medock. The wines produced from Cabernet Sauvignon in California, Chili, Australia and New Zealand are extremely popular. In Bulgaria this variety is the most widespread one for the production of red wines.
It is a middle-ripening variety - it ripens in September: in hotter regions - at the beginning, and in colder regions - at the end of the month. The wines are characterized by an intense flavour of small red fruits - namely black currants, blackberry and mulberry, intense dark red colour and good density. When the wine matures in oak barrels, it develops a rich, complex flavour in which spices, oak nuances and smoke are to be found. The older wines have chocolate and cinnamon flavour. The taste is dense, juicy and harmonious. The wines reveal their maximum qualities usually after 3 to 5 year of maturity.

MERLOT

This variety comes from France. Just like Cabernet Sauvignon, this is one of the five varieties, which participate in the production of all wine in the Bordeau region. The variety is cultivated in southern France, too. It is widely spread in all vine-growing and wine-producing countries all over the world. In Bulgaria it is cultivated in all vine-growing and wine-producing regions.
The grapes ripen around the middle of September - approximately 10-15 days before Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines mature slower than the ones produced from Cabernet Sauvignon and, when they are young, their taste is more harmonious because of the lower acidity and the presence of milder tannin. The flavour of the young wines is described as dominated by the taste of ripe cherry and prune. In some regions flora nuances can be found. The wine develops well in the presence of oak wood and the mature wines are characterized by a strong complex flavour in which oak nuances, candied fruit and smoke can be found. Truffle nuances are typical for the mature wines produced from this variety.

MUSKAT OTTONEL

Robert Moreal in the town of Ange, France, obtained this variety from a seed in 1852. Today it is spread in almost all vine-growing countries.
Muskat Ottonel is a comparatively mid to early ripening variety. The vintage is usually in the first half of September but it often takes place at the end of August.
The white dry wines produced from this variety are impressive, with an intense flavour of flowers, reminiscent of violets and geranium, with a considerable density and a medium freshness. The wines should be consumed when they are still young. Very good sweet wines are produced from this variety.

PINOT NOIR

The origin of this variety is connected with France. It is spread mainly in Burgundy, Champagne and Alsace. It is also well-spread in California where wines of high quality are produced from it. In Bulgaria it is quite limited - mainly around the Sliven district.
Pinot Noir is distinguished for its excellent fertility. Typical for this variety is that it is rarely combined with other varieties.
The qualities of the wines depend to a great degree on the terroir and the climate. In France prestigious sparkling wines are produced from it in Champagne, and red wines in Burgundy. When the wine is young, it is described as a wine with a ruby colour, incredible pleasantness and a flavour composed of the typical nuances of cherry, mulberry and raspberry and, sometimes, smoke. If the wine matures in contact with oak wood, it develops a rich, complex flavour.
In Bulgaria this variety accumulates a considerable sugar content. The wines have a mild flavour, dark red colour and lower extract than the ones produced from Cabernet Sauvignon.

CHARDONNAY

This prestigious variety has been cultivated in France - Burgundy and Champagne - since olden times. Today it is widely distributed in all vine-growing and wine-producing countries all over the world. Its name is connected with some of the most prestigious French white wines coming from Chablis and Burgundy and the sparkling champagne wines. During recent decades the wines produced from this variety in California, Australia, Chili and Argentina have become extremely popular.
Chardonnay is an early wine variety. In hot regions like the Plovdiv District it ripens at the end of August and at the beginning of September, in colder regions like northeastern Bulgaria - around the middle of September.
White wines of extremely good quality are produced from this variety. They usually have an intense flavour, dominated by nuances of tropical fruit /melon and pineapple/ with fig and citrus accents and, if it is cultivated in limestone soils, typical mineral nuances. The wines produced from Chardonnay develop very well in oak barrels and have a rich, complex flavour.

TRAMINER

The origin of this variety is Austrian - it comes from the Traminer District in southern Tyrol. It is widely spread in the Franken District, Germany, and Alsace, France, where excellent dry white wines with notable prestige are produced. In Bulgaria it is cultivated on small areas in northeastern Bulgaria.
Traminer is a comparatively early to mid ripening variety. In Bulgaria it ripens at the beginning and up to the middle of September. Traminer is resilient to low winter temperatures but it is susceptible to droughts. Comparatively rich humus-carbonate humid soils in the cooler, airy, hilly regions of northeastern Bulgaria are appropriate for it.
Dry white wines are produced from the Traminer variety. They have a strong flavour with a harmonious fresh taste. The character of flavour can be described as intense with nuances of spices (this is where its name comes from) as well as flowery fragrance reminiscent of rose. The best wines from this variety are produced in northeastern Bulgaria.

SAUVIGNON BLANC

This variety comes from France and it is spread mainly on the southwestern Atlantic coast and in Pays d’Oc region. It is a constituent part in the production of world famous medium-sweet wines from Sautern and some prestigious dry wines from Entre-de-Mer and Grav. It is cultivated in Austria and New Zealand and is known as “Fume Blanc”. In Bulgaria it is cultivated in the Burgas, Razgrad and Targovishte districts and some micro regions that are appropriate for it.
Sauvignon Blanc is a mid-early wine variety - it ripens around the middle of September. It is attacked by peronospore, oidium and grey mildew. In the region of Sautern it develops noble moulding, which adds an unforgettable taste to the wine.
Depending upon the region and the vintage time, it can be used independently or in mixtures for the production of dry white wines with a fine taste. It is considered to be one of the most difficult varieties for wine production. The most typical flavour characteristics of the wines produced from Sauvignon Blanc are the flavour of hay, tropical fruit and gooseberries. The taste is sweet, delicate and extremely harmonious. The wines should be consumed when they are young.

UGNI BLANC

This is an Italian variety, widely spread in France. The famous French Cognac is produced from it in the Cognac region, France. In our country it is cultivated mainly in the Pomorie and Burgas Districts where high quality distillate wine materials and white dry wines are produced from it.
Ugni Blanc is a late ripening variety - it ripens at the end of September and at the beginning of October.
The wines produced from this variety are light and fresh with a fine, tender flavour. However, they do not develop their qualities when they mature. They are used mainly as distillate wine materials.

"Khan’s Tent"

Hanska Shatra (Khan’s Tent) which sits atop a hill several kilometers north of Sunny Beach. Set in a secluded wooded setting with beautiful views of the coast below, the spot is supposedly the one where Khan Krum had a military encampment in 812. The large, rounded structure has twenty curved concrete columns inside which connect at the apex, resembling a huge tent such as was used by the Proto-Bulgarians. The interior is decorated with mosaics, one of which depicts the Khan feasting. Waiters wear period costumes. Live folk music starts nightly at seven, followed by an hour-long elaborate floor show. Predictably, the place is touristy - and expensive - but, it’s vacation time !!!

"Picadilly" Restaurant

This is one of the best restaurants in Sunny Beach with a very good local and international menu. The staff are very friendly and helpfull. The atmosphere is fantastice with live music every night. Reasonable prices. Also very good for fish & seafood.

Food is great in there! What makes it so special is that you dont have to be scared of what you are going to get on your plate. Meals are quite routine restaurant food but still good.
And about 9 o’clock in the evening turns the place into a bar (you can still have your meal and then just stay in the bar). For some reasons there’s lot of swedish in the bar always..

You can have a cheeseburger meal on lunch time. It tastes really good after spending many hours under the hot sun on the beach.

Sikon group

1/. I would just like to add our recommendation of Sikon Group (http://www.sikongroup.com) in Sofia since using them in July/August.

When we originally booked a few months ago via email we got very prompt and helpful advice from Yasen, who runs the company with his business partner (whose name I have forgotten, sorry!). Yasen even pointed out that I had asked to book the car for longer than I actually needed!

Our flight arrived in Sofia at a horrible time in the morning (about 1.30am) and Yasen met us from the flight and gave us a full run-down of the car and provided maps, driving directions to get on the Varna road from the airport, which is a bit tricky, and some very useful advice about driving in Bulgaria.

During our stay we were involved in a very minor prang with a Bulgarian driver, who had scraped by us on a very narrow road but decided it was our fault, and rang Yasen, who sorted it all out over the phone.

On the way home we dropped the car off at an even more awful time of the morning (around 4am) and Yasen and his partner were there to meet us, smiling and friendly.

The car was very reasonably priced and was absolutely no problem at all. I can’t recommend Sikon group enough, they are great value and very helpful, friendly and professional.

2/.I have used Sikon about a dozen times.1 car i used broke down about 320kms away from Sofia.I had a replacement within 4 hours.Have tried other car hire firms in the past but none can match this company and their prices.

3/. Been using Sikon for three years now 3 or 4 times a year, cannot speak highly enough about Yasen and his service. Get 10% discount from him as a regular customer. Sept hire 14 days Peugot estate 279 euros + 100 deposit (cash only) We had a breakdown last year and although Yasen was on holiday he insisted in bringing out a replacement car for us himself, was in VT in a couple of hours. Cars are always clean and well looked after and customers are treated like royalty.


4/. Totally have to recommend Sikon Car Hire in Sofia. Have used 3 other car hire companies before and have always had problems either with the car (handbrake defunct, broken lights, windows won’t open etc) or with the company not turning up on time or generally messing us around.

Sikon were VERY different. I 100% got the impression they cared about us as clients. We hired a Corsa which although old worked perfectly well and was clean. Total bonus - it was delivered to us with a full tank of petrol which was a first. The last thing you need is worrying about filling up late at night after a long flight. They also gave us 2 free maps of Sofia and Bulgaria. They were very clear that we didn’t need to worry about any bumps or scratches to the vehicle- we were just responsible for the tyres. When we returned the car they were there in the carpark waiting for us and after a quick hand over gave us a t-shirt as well. The price was good as well and got a 7% discount for having the MyBulgaria card. Definitely be using them again. www.sikongroup.com

Just thought I’d put on record that I used Bogicars after spotting the link to their website in Smiggy’s post earlier in this topic, and had no trouble at all with their service.

I was making my second visit to the Varna region - I’ve bought an apartment in Vanitsa, just above St Constantine - and fancied having a better look round the area, North, South, inland etc, than my first visit.

They were happy to bring the car to me at my Hotel in St. C and let me drop the car off at the Airport - someone was there to meet me and check everything over.

It cost me about £96 plus petrol for four days. I was lucky enough to receive a free upgrade as the car I’d pre-booked wasn’t available - Result!!

I got the car (renault symbol) for 143 euros - which I work out to be @ £20 per day (includes pick up and drop off as Burgas airport) Which I thought was a fair price. Glad to say we had no problems at all. Car given was actually better then the one we booked. Swift, no messing about handback at Bourgas airport, and a promise of 10% discount if we use then again

Villa Nr. 12 in “Sunny Hills Villas” is a cozy bungalow with 2 bedrooms, one bathroom, and living room with equipped kitchen. We have dedicated a separate page to this villa, because it is slightly different than the other villas in Sunny Hills Villas. The total built up area of this bungalow is the same as the other 3-bed bungalows in Sunny Hills Villas - 85 m² - and therefore its bedrooms and living room are larger and you will feel more comfortable with having more space in the rooms.

Villa Nr. 12 is perfect for families with children, the villa will accommodate up to 5 people. Staying at Villa Nr. 12 you still take advantage of the complex facilities. You have access to the pool, 2 covered BBQs and to the main attraction - the minigolf course.

Our prices are competitively set for bookings of two weeks or more. This £40 surcharge goes towards the extra costs (such as administration, cleaning, transportation, and days lost for letting) and applies to bookings upto, and including, 13 nights. (This means that if you rent a villa for one week, you will pay £290 resp. £390 (low / high season) for the one week stay. If you rent a villa for two weeks, you will pay £250 resp. £350 (low / high season) per week).
